Episode 2 - Scene 5 (Final Scene)

Scene 5
[Front room of Donna’s mother’s house decorated with red, blue and white balloons, tables full of nice, little foods, Banner saying “Donna, we missed you” – members of staff are sorting it all out]

CJ: Josh? Where did you get these balloons from?
J: They were left over from the campaign
CJ: Ah! That would explain the Jed Bartlet for President writing on the side of them
J: Nobody will notice
CJ: If you say so
J: Look, they’re balloons; I don’t see anyone else complaining
E: Josh? Why do these balloons have ‘Jed Bartlet for President written on them’?
CJ: Exactly
J: Nobody else will notice – men don’t notice
E: I notice
C: Josh, do you know these balloons I’m putting up have ‘Jed Bartlet for President’ written on one side?
CJ: You’re right, nobody will notice, men won’t notice
J: Look, I wanted balloons; I didn’t have time to go-
L: Josh, I’ve just been putting up some of these balloons and I realised you’ve got the ones from the campaign – they all have ‘Jed Bartlet for President’ written on them
J: For God’s sake, yes the balloons have ‘Jed Bartlet for President’ written on them. Does it matter? You put them up so the writing side doesn’t show. I mean, is it so hard? [Then quieter] I bet Donna won’t notice!
L: [to CJ] Is he ok?
CJ: He got the wrong balloons, he’s feeling a little stressed
J: I did not get the wrong balloons, I did not have time to go out and I thought it would be nice to have balloons so I thought I’d get some from the campaign – and I thought it was a rather good idea until you all started moaning about them. It’s a party for Donna-
MM: I thought you said it wasn’t a party
J: Aren’t you meant to be guarding Donna upstairs?
MM: No need to be snappy, boy, I was just checking the progress
J: We’re doing just fine, now can you go watch her, I don’t want her coming down before we’re ready
C: Geez, I would have thought you wanted to be nice to the mother-in-law
J: She is NOT my mother-in-law
E: She’s my Aunt
J: That’s nice for you
C: Yeah but she will be
J: WHO KNOWS? Maybe one day. This is assuming that Donna actually loves me. I don’t deny the fact that I love her, because it appears to be common knowledge
C: She loves you
J: Yeah and how would you know
C: Sometimes you just know [he smiles across at Emma]
J: Why is everyone saying that, I don’t know!
C: Well you should, just look at her eyes, she loves you
J: If only it really were that simple
CJ: It is that simple Josh, everyone else can see it, I’m afraid it’s only you that can’t
J: And I’m the one who wants to most of all
CJ: Maybe that’s why
J: What?
CJ: Maybe if you stop staring so hard and actually just look then you’ll see what everyone else sees
J: And what’s that
CJ: Two people perfect for each other
J: Then why doesn’t she say anything
CJ: Maybe she’s waiting till the time is right
J: And when is that?
CJ: You’ll know when you know
J: That isn’t helpful
CJ: I know
L: The President says to call him at 8 tonight so that he can say hello and see how she’s doing
J: It’s a shame we couldn’t have taken her there
L: Well, it’s cosier here, and he really can’t take that much time off
J: Oh well, the place is looking good
E: Apart from the balloons
J: Oh quit it about the balloons
E: Don’t be nasty to me, I’ll tell Donna
J: Yeah and what?
E: That doesn’t scare you?
J: Well, yes it does, but I hide it well, don’t you think?
E: Oh, you do
MM: Are you ready yet?
J: Get back up there [MM shrugs and goes back up stairs. Josh follows her up]
J: We’re ready
[Donna comes down the stairs (as ‘Maybe I’m amazed’ by Paul McCartney begins to play) She enters the room, where the lights have been dimmed and a cake with candles is glowing with the words ‘Donna we’ve missed you’ written in icing. It is all smiles and laughter:-

Maybe I'm amazed at the way you love me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I love you
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you pulled me out of time
And hung me on a line
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you
Maybe I'm a man and maybe I'm a lonely man
Who's in the middle of something
That he doesn't really understand
Maybe I'm a man and maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me understand

Maybe I'm amazed at the way you're with me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I leave you
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you help me sing my song
You right me when I'm wrong
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you

Maybe I'm a man and maybe I'm a lonely man
Who's in the middle of something
That he doesn't really understand
Maybe I'm a man and maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me understand

– this lasts a few minutes then we get closes ups on both Josh and Donna smiling at each other, then just their eyes, then a shot of the whole room with them smiling across it at each other]
